குறள் 301:.

செல்லிடத்துக் காப்பான் சினங்காப்பான் அல்லிடத்துக் 

காக்கின்என் காவாக்கால் என்?

தன் சினம் பலிதமாகுமிடத்தில் சினம் கொள்ளாமல் இருப்பவனே சினங்காப்பவன்; பலிக்காத இடத்தில் சினத்தைக் காத்தால் என்ன? காக்காவிட்டால் என்ன?

Translation:.

Where thou hast power thy angry will to work, thy wrath restrain; 

Where power is none, what matter if thou check or give it rein?

English meaning

He restrains his anger who restrains it when it can injure; when it cannot injure, what does it matter whether he restrain it, or not ?

குறள் 302:.

செல்லா இடத்துச் சினந்தீது செல்லிடத்தும் 

இல்அதனின் தீய பிற.

Tamil meaning

வலியோரிடம் சினம் கொண்டால், அதனால் கேடு விளையும். மெலியோரிடம் சினம் கொண்டாலும் அதைவிடக் கேடு வேறொன்றுமில்லை.

Translation:.

Where power is none to wreak thy wrath, wrath importent is ill; Where thou hast power thy will to work, 'tis greater, evil still.

English meaning

Anger is bad, even when it cannot injure; when it can injure; there is no greater evil.

குறள் 303:.

மறத்தல் வெகுளியை யார்மாட்டும் தீய 

பிறத்தல் அதனான் வரும்.

Tamil meaning

யார்மீது சினம் கொண்டாலும் அதை மறந்துவிட வேண்டும். இல்லாவிட்டால் அந்தச் சினமே தீய விளைவுகளுக்குக் காரணமாகும்.

Translation:.

If any rouse thy wrath, the trespass straight forget; 

For wrath an endless train of evils will beget.

English meaning

Forget anger towards every one, as fountains of evil spring from it.

குறள் 304:.

நகையும் உவகையும் கொல்லும் சினத்தின் 

பகையும் உளவோ பிற.

Tamil meaning

சினம் கொள்கிறவர்களுக்கு முகமலர்ச்சி மாத்திரமின்றி மனமகிழ்ச்சியும் மறைந்து போய் விடும்.

Translation:.

Wrath robs the face of smiles, the heart of joy,

What other foe to man works such annoy?

Is there a greater enemy than anger, which kills both laughter and joy ?

குறள் 305:.

தன்னைத்தான் காக்கின் சினங்காக்க காவாக்கால் 

தன்னையே கொல்லுஞ் சினம்.

Tamil meaning

ஒருவன் தன்னைத்தானே காத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டுமானால், சினத்தைக் கைவிட வேண்டும். இல்லையேல் சினம், அவனை அழித்துவிடும்.

Translation:.

If thou would'st guard thyself, guard against wrath alway; 

Gainst wrath who guards not, him his wrath shall slay.

English meaning

If a man would guard himself, let him guard against anger; if he do not guard it, anger will kill him.

குறள் 306:.

சினமென்னும் சேர்ந்தாரைக் கொல்லி இனமென்னும் 

ஏமப் புணையைச் சுடும்.

Tamil meaning

சினங்கொண்டவரை அழிக்கக் கூடியதாகச் சினமென்னும் தீயே இருப்பதால், அது அவரை மட்டுமின்றி, அவரைப் பாதுகாக்கும் தோணி போன்ற சுற்றத்தையும் அழித்துவிடும்.

Translation:.

Wrath, the fire that slayeth whose draweth near, 

Will burn the helpful 'raft' of kindred dear.

English meaning

The fire of anger will burn up even the pleasant raft of friendship.

குறள் 307:.

சினத்தைப் பொருளென்று கொண்டவன் கேடு 

நிலத்தறைந்தான் கைபிழையா தற்று.

Tamil meaning

நிலத்தைக் கையால் அறைந்தவனுக்கு அவன் கைதான் வலிக்கும். அது போலத்தான் சினத்தைப் பண்பாகக் கொண்டவன் நிலையும் ஆகும்.

Translation:.

The hand that smites the earth unfailing feels the sting; 

So perish they who nurse their wrath as noble thing. 

English meaning

Destruction will come upon him who ragards anger as a good thing, as surely as the hand of him who strikes the ground will not fail.

குறள் 308:.

இணர்எரி தோய்வன்ன இன்னா செயினும் 

புணரின் வெகுளாமை நன்று.

Tamil meaning

தீயினால் சுட்டெரிப்பது போன்ற துன்பங்களை ஒருவன் தொடர்ந்து செய்தாலும் அதற்காக வருந்தி அவன் உறவு கொள்ள வரும் போது சினங்கொள்ளாமல் இருப்பதே நல்லது.

Translation:.

Though men should work thee woe, like touch of tongues of fire. 

'Tis well if thou canst save thy soul from burning ire.

English meaning

Though one commit things against you as painful (to bear) as if a bundle of fire had been thrust upon you, it will be well, to refrain, if possible, from anger.

குறள் 309:.

உள்ளிய தெல்லாம் உடனெய்தும் உள்ளத்தால் 

உள்ளான் வெகுளி எனின்.

Tamil meaning

உள்ளத்தால் சினங்கொள்ளாதவனாக இருந்தால் எண்ணியவற்றையெல்லாம் உடனடியாகப் பெற முடியும்.

Translation:.

If man his soul preserve from wrathful fires, 

He gains with that whate'er his soul desires. 

English meaning

If a man never indulges anger in his heart, he will at once obtain whatever he has thought of.

குறள் 310:.

இறந்தார் இறந்தார் அனையர் சினத்தைத் 

துறந்தார் துறந்தார் துணை.

எல்லையற்ற சினம் கொள்வார் இறந்தவர்க்கு ஒப்பாவார். சினத்தை அறவே துறந்தவர் துறவிக்கு ஒப்பாவார்.

Translation:.

Men of surpassing wrath are like the men who've passed away; 

Who wrath renounce, equals of all-renouncing sages they.

English meaning

Those, who give way to excessive anger, are no better than dead men; but those, who are freed from it, are equal to those who are freed (from death).
